White Shark / Sura Puttu

Amma's recipe #5

OK....This is my first post after the arrival of my baby boy! Been hectic since then but enjoying every bit of it. So, this dish is my absolute favorite. SURA PUTTU....white shark sauteed with lots of ginger, garlic and onion, mildly spiced and the ginger garlic flavor just bursts through. And this is so so good for nursing mothers as it enhances the quantity and quality of your breast-milk (do make sure you add loads of garlic)

Serves 5

You Will Need:

1/2 Kilo White Shark, Large Cuts
3 Large Onions, Finely Chopped
20 Garlic Cloves, Finely Chopped
1 inch Ginger, Finely Cut
5 Green Chilies, Finely Chopped
Some Curry Leaves
Some Coriander Leaves, Chopped
1/4 Turmeric Powder
1/2 Tsp Red Chili Powder
Salt to Taste
100 ml Oil

The Cooking:

Place the fish over a saucepan and pour water till the fish submerges. Add couple of pinches of turmeric powder and boil on high heat for 10 mins.

Take off heat and discard the water. Remove the skin and bones from the fish. Crumble the fish with your fingers and squeeze all the excess water. Add turmeric powder, chilli powder and salt to the fish and keep aside.

Heat oil on a wok and add the chopped ginger and garlic for couple of mins. Now add the chopped onions and green chilli. Saute on medium heat till the onions turn translucent.

Now add the fish and saute on medium heat till the puttu turns a golden brown. Finally add the curry leaves and chopped coriander leaves and saute for couple of mins. Take off heat and serve hot with rice!!!

Note:
  • Make sure the fish is nice and fresh. If the fish stinks when being boiled, then the fish has gone bad.
  • Keep the heat on medium heat through out cooking.

Happy Cooking!
